Penang is commonly known for its good food. Ask anyone about Penang and you’ll get an earful of ravings about its food. A popular favourite is its Char Koay Teow which is a scrumptious fried flat rice noodle dish. The Assam Laksa is also much loved and its regular Koay Teow Th’ng is popular amongst those who like the simple soupy bowl of noodles.

Seafood here is fantastic as the restaurants get fresh seafood on a regular basis. Foodies opt for Orchean, which is an oyster omelet dish which’s taste lingers in your mouth and leaves you wanting more. Also popular are the fried shellfish dishes such as Lala and Balitong. Fried squid rings also make for the perfect snack.

The style of food in Penang is mainly Nyonya, if you visit restaurants which serve dishes with rice. There is one dish that is favored by many Penangnites; Roti Babi which literally translates to Pork Sandwich. It is fried bread with a minced pork filling and eaten with Worchestershire sauce and Chili Padi.

For dessert, have a bowl of Cendol or Ais Kacang, which are shaved ice delights flavoured with syrup and yummy ingredients such as jellies and red beans. Its aesthetics are pretty much similar to the Thai desserts.

The price of hawker food and dessert are affordable, ranging from RM1 - RM5 depending on its ingredients and what you order. A typical price for a plate or bowl of noodles is RM 3.50 and for desserts around RM 1.50. Seafood may be slightly costly as it requires a bit more attention and preparation, even though the seafood is fresh and brought in daily.

Popular food destinations are the Gurney Drive and Pulau Tikus hawker centers where you can find almost all types of Penang food. Also popular is a Chinese shop on Penang Road where you can find the ever famous Cendol stall outside, to serve customers and passersby. For more exquisite dining, head up to Batu Ferringhi for a seafood or good western meal.
