Gurney Drive has long been the center of attention in Penang for
both the locals and tourists. It is located across the sea, cordoned off by a brick wall and a rockier-than-sand
bottom. Its bustling attraction here is the major strip of food stalls where you can find all sorts of Penang
favourites.
You can look forward to indulging in char koay teow, asam laksa, curry laksa, koay teow
th’ng, popiah, steamboat (lok lok), ais kacang, cendol, fruit rojak, pasembur, shell fish, baked or roasted fish,
and even fried chicken skins which is such a rarity in Malaysia to be sold on its own! Gurney Drive patrons usually
sit there in the night air enjoying a food, drink, and chatter till the wee hours of the morning as it is
affordable and you can pretty much dress down there.
Gurney Drive, or Persiaran Gurney was named after Sir Henry Gurney, a Malayan High
Commissioner who was assassinated by the guerrillas of the Malayan Communist Party during the Emergency period in
the early 1950s.
Although the Gurney Drive comprises of an entire stretch of buildings, hotels and local
restaurants, it is most famous for its hawker centre. Further up Gurney Drive, away from the hawker centre are
restaurants that serve Penang cuisines, one of which is a rare find: Roti babi which is pork bread if translated
literally. It is a popular fried pork sandwich from Penang eaten with Worchestershire sauce and chopped chilli.
Look out for the ‘Orchean’ which is an oyster omelette that will guarantee your tongue’s satisfaction! The
restaurants also operate on a stall basis so you can pretty much get everything under one roof.
Next to the hawker area is the Gurney mall and a new G Hotel which is said to be a
lavish and smart business hotel. It seems to be the talk of the town, and with the convenience of a
recently revamped mall and a hawker centre at the end of the road, you can find everything you need on this
stretch.
