Batu Ferringhi

Batu Ferringhi is the most popular beach in Penang.

Known as the Foreigners’ Rock, Batu Ferringhi is a famous strip of beach along the northern coast of Penang. It has beautiful white sand beaches and has been a major tourist destination for sun, sea, and surf. Along this strip of beaches is an array of luxurious hotels such as the Shangri-La resorts, Golden Sands, and Park Royal hotel. Across the road sees some beach restaurants, bars, and souvenir shops for that ultimate feeling of tropical relaxation.

During the daytime you can find yourself getting full attention from the sun, and can look forward to a bouquet of activities such as parasailing, jet skiing, banana boat riding (absolute fun), and even horse-riding along the beach. You will have to look out for this service as the stables are located somewhere across the road from the beach.

While basking in the sun is the ultimate holiday must-do, cooling off in the sea can be a good idea if you beware of jellyfish. Some jellyfish get brought to shore so it is important for you to note that you may get stung by jellyfish. Medication and gels for jellyfish stings can be found at any pharmacy and you might want to stock up just in case! Otherwise, the hotel swimming pools make for a great cooling down if you are a guest.

For an Asian dinner, try Eden restaurant for the freshest seafood on the strip. They also have a series of live shows in the evening and you can pick your seafood from the tanks – to make sure you get the best. It may be a little more costly than a simple roadside restaurant but it is definitely worth your time and money. Next to Eden is The Ship which is a restaurant in the form of a ship. Its surreal exterior and interior make it almost impossible to resist dining there. It is popular for its Western cuisine and is known to have the best steak in town. Fish and lobsters are available if you want a more ship-at-sea feel.

After a scrumptious meal you can hit the bars for a cocktail or take a walk up Batu Ferringhi’s hill of night markets where you can find all sort of bits and bobs. It’s where you can find cheap clothes, imitation goods, souvenirs, shoes, trinkets, and children’s toys. Huddled at the roadside and covered with a plastic canvas, the walk is an exciting journey as you pass by interesting stalls of little goodies. You will not leave empty handed as you’d probably find something you like, including dvds which is something tourists and locals look forward to when hitting the Batu Ferringhi stretch of night markets.

A stay at Batu Ferringhi will not disappoint. From experience it has only left most of us wanting more. Don’t be intimidated by the luxurious beach front properties because just across the road lays a strip of affordable hotels who share the same beach!
